Adrenocorticotropic Hormone "what is this"?

ACTH is a hormone produced in the Pituitary Gland, this stimulate secretion of the hormone Cortisol by the Adrenal Glands.

ACTH is requested to diagnose Cushing Disease & Addison Disease and if you have abnormal Cortisol levels, which have been detected.

Cortisol is very important for regulating, protein, glucose and Lipid metabolism.

Measuring both ACTH and Cortisol can help sort out some of the causes of these conditions.

Having too much Cortisol in your blood causes Cushing syndrome, you may have symptoms, such as obesity, muscle weakness & acne.

Cushing's Syndrome is due to a tumour in the pituitary gland that makes ACTH.

Low or lacking levels of Cortisol can cause Addison's Disease, symptoms you may have tiredness, weight loss and loss of appetite.

Having a blood test that measures both ACTH & Cortisol can help sort out the cause of the above conditions.
