Vitamin K is a Nutrient that our bodies require in small, regular amounts. It is super essential for the formation of several substances called Coagulation Factors, that work together to clot our blood when injuries to blood vessels occur.

Having insufficient Vitamin K, could lead to excessive bleeding and easy bruising.

Since our bodies can’t produce a sufficient amount of Vitamin K, a certain amount must be taken through our diet, such as:-

  • Leafy green vegetables

  • Kale

  • Spinach

  • Cabbage

  • Broccoli

  • Soybeans

The most common causes of Vitamin K deficiency are, insufficient dietary intake, inadequate absorption, and decreased storage of the vitamin due to Liver disease.

In the UK Vitamin K is Rare in healthy individuals, but is relatively common in people who are really poorly, such as chronic conditions, or people with a decreased ability to digest and/or absorb nutrients from food, especially impaired absorption of fats, due to diseases, such as:-

  • Cystic Fibrosis

  • Coeliac diseases

  • Chronic pancreatitis

  • Crohns diseases

The signs or symptoms associated with Vitamin K deficiency may include:-

  • Easy bruising

  • Oozing from nose or gums

  • Heavy Monthly cycles

  • Excessive bleeding from wounds

  • Blood in your urine or stool (poo)
